You have arranged all well for a nice afternoon coffee with your friends who came back from their vacations in Croatia.
The door bell ring, you open the door, they jump in: Guys, you must go there! After they recovered their breath and took a sip of water, they say: Plitvice (plit-wee-tse)!
That evening you do not utter a word
Next day you have been googled Plitvice Lakes Croatia for couple of hours. So easy to find and get all about this pearl of Croatia, you have red many articles, reviews, enjoy photos and videos on numerous websites, news, portals, blogs. You visited and explored a bunch of them. Now you're the expert, familiar completely with all that beauty.
Now, you're here! Maybe you may learn something more?!
Did you know that the Lakes are occupying an area of less than 1% of the whole NP only? It’s possible that you’ve already found this data but in that case you must be a perfectionist or you’ve got a fever becoming mad about the Park.
Did you ask yourself what contains the rest? Woods, grasslands? Are there any populated places in the Park? Do people live there?
Why not discover it more? Consider taking an easy bike ride or a relax walk deep into the park through the century-old beech shade. After just a few minutes ride or a few steps your eyes become green painted by the overwhelming greenery. Then you stop by a clear tiny stream suddenly appeared out of nowhere. You taste icy refreshing spring water even in a hot summer day. Maybe a roe deer was drinking at the same place just a moment ago? You start sharing a nature, a wilderness with its residents. A stream, a small river and finally the lake. You don’t need to bring water from home, your bidon always will be full!
Frozen with the magnificent blue perfectly surrounded by green you have to ask yourself where does all that water come from? There must be a source somewhere. You don’t hesitate, you go there! If you meet anyone on your way there it means I call a beer!
Speaking of drinks let me tell you a bit about local food. Actually, one word is quite enough – delicious! Maybe this will sound quirky but on the first place it is phenomenal potatoes from Lika County officially protected by EU added to the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications. The meat does not even have to be mentioned. If you are not meat eater how about fresh cottage cheese? You can easily meet the farmers, speak a few words with them, and if you wish, a master-workman, the cow? You may find out some milky secrets ;)
Let’s go further. About 30 min drive or a bit longer but delightful bike ride and you crop up in a pastoral valley. That make sense? Untouched calm deep green (again!) river slowly flows through the middle. A church belfry in the distance. All around low stone walls make fences. Sheep. Watermills on a spring water (again!). A few of them. I almost forgot geese and ducks. And cows, of course. I flew with my thoughts…
